Infant Mickey Costume Video
Before Mickey Mouse, Walt Disney’s primary cartoon was Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. However, Disney did not own the rights to Oswald. The rights to Oswald the Rabbit was owned by Charles Mintz of Universal Studios. So, when Disney asked for a larger budget, Mintz agreed only if Disney worked for him and agreed to a budget cut. Disney refused and left to restart his own production company.
Disney’s first cartoon creation after losing Oswald the Lucky Rabbit was Mickey Mouse, based on Walt Disney’s former pet mouse he used to own on his farm. Disney originally wanted to name his creation Mortimer Mouse but was persuaded by his wife, Lillian, to change it to Mickey Mouse. However, actor Mickey Rooney claimed that Walt Disney named the mouse after meeting him.
Mickey Mouse was actually drawn by one of Disney’s animators, Ub Iwerks. However, as Disney owned the IP rights to Mickey Mouse, Disney was eventually recognized as the creator of Mickey Mouse.
Alongside with Mickey Mouse, Disney also created a Minnie Mouse as Mickey’s wife or girlfriend. Pluto, Goofy, Donald & Daisy Duck were also created as Mickey’s friends. However, all through the years, Mickey Mouse remains as the most popular and central figure amongst Disney’s cartoon characters, and the most popular amongst kids.
